When I try to start my 1977 sportster the starter solenoide will engage but it takes several button pushes for it to engage the bendix gear ot the ring gear on the clutch basket and turn the engine over. The soenoide is new and nothing seams to be binding. Is there a shim missing some where?

I had a similar problem. I had the starter solenoid, and starter replaced at a local shop in order to fix my problem. The technician said he had to add shims to properly align my starter. He also gave me back my old start and said it was still good. So if you need a used starter I've got one I'll sell you for cheap.
